PhD defense by Cecilie Glerup

Organising science in society - the conduct and justification of responsible research

billede

Cecilie conducted her ethnographic research field study at the Center for Synthetic Biology. Her key findings are compared to a similar field study in USA. Parts of the PhD project is on how scientists make sense of political demands for enhanced social responsibility.

One finding is that ideas about "scientific responsibility" are at the same time are denied, ridiculed and praised.  Furthermore, ideas about responsibility seem to be connected to both a professional identity as "a scientist", to a specific Northern European way of thinking about responsibility and to funding strategies.
